Otago Academy of Sport co-ordinates, manages and delivers a range of high quality athlete and coach services across Otago and Central Otago, from sports science and sports medicine services through to athlete life advice and coach support. At present these services are being provided to athletes selected for the two locally supported Academy Talent Accelerator Programs, namely Academy Otago and Academy Central Otago.

OAS Vision:

Nurture, support and educate talented Otago athletes to achieve excellence in sport.”

OAS Goal:

To support each athlete to achieve their sporting potential, as well as also supporting them with their personal growth and to develop leadership skills so they can inspire other athletes in the region to achieve greatness

Community Reach and Athlete Wellbeing

Our goal is to grow great athletes and great people who give back to their communities. The second year of our programme looks to develop leadership skills, with our athletes understanding the benefit of giving back their newfound knowledge and skills to their clubs members, teammates and whanau, assisting with administration roles, officiating, coaching and mentoring of other athletes. All our programmes have a focus on health and wellbeing, educating the athletes to be healthy in mind and body, which leads to healthy whanau and healthy communities. We also offer sport science services to the Otago sporting community in the form of workshops and group practical sessions extending our reach even further.

OAS Projects

In addition to this, OAS develops and  tailors programs and services in partnership with a range of regional organisations such as Otago Hockey, Otago University Rowing, Otago Basketball and Netball (NNL players), and individual athletes like our local World Champion motocross athlete Courtney Duncan. The NZ Elite Motorsport Academy camp and graduate program is also coordinated and delivered by OAS in partnership with Motorsport NZ and the Motorsport NZ Scholarship Trust. OAS also coordinate the biennial Connecting Coaches Conference.
